Amethyst - February’s Birthstone

Happy birthday to all of you born in February!

Did you know that in addition to being the official birthstone for February, amethyst is also the birthstone for the zodiac sign of Pisces and the gemstone for the 6th anniversary of marriage.
Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz, occurring naturally as crystals within rocks. It is the most valued member of the quartz family, considered a semiprecious gem for its violet color. Heating amethyst removes the color or changes it to the yellow of Citrine. Today, most Citrines is made in this way. The word amethyst comes from the Greek word "amethystos," meaning sober. 

A gift of amethyst is a symbol of protection, said to strengthen the bonds of love and overcome difficulty. It is also a symbol of spirituality and piety.
